Peptides
Although peptides and Ferulic Acid are helpful ingredients in skin care to correct damaged skin or maintain healthy, youthful skin, they have very different jobs.
Peptides are like mini proteins and proteins are made of long chains of amino acids. Peptides are ‘tricksters’ for the skin. When your collagen breaks down due to aging, sun damage, and environmental toxins, it forms its own peptides that tell your skin it is damaged and it needs to make new collagen.
By applying peptides on the surface of the skin, we are trying to trick our skin into thinking that it has lost collagen recently and needs to make more. Collagen is what keeps our skin supple and thick, which helps stop it from wrinkling. There are also peptides which tell the skin to stop making pigmentation which helps with the formation of brown spots and hyperpigmentation.
Of course the peptides found in most cosmetics are created in a lab to ensure stability and effectiveness. Peptides are small, which means they can penetrate the skin’s protective barriers and do their magic deeper in the skin layers where it is needed.
Ferulic Acid
You’ve probably heard a lot about the need for antioxidants in skin care and Ferulic Acid is one of the most effective. It is found in many plants and in rice bran oil and it has the ability to strengthen a plant’s cellular wall and protect it from damage including sun damage.
Makes sense then, why it found its way into many skin care products.SkinCeuticals – CE Ferulic
On its own, Ferulic Acid is a powerful antioxidant but it also has the ability to extend the effectiveness of other anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E. In studies, the addition of Ferulic Acid to Vitamins C & E, doubled their ability to protect the skin from the sun. In fact, exposure to ultraviolet light actually increases the antioxidant power of Ferulic acid.
Vitamin C, another essential antioxidant, can be difficult to stabilize as it oxidizes quickly when exposed to air or moisture. Ferulic Acid also helps keep the vitamin C stable which led to the creation of one of the leading serums on the market, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum.
It’s important to remember that it takes a combination of ingredients to keep your skin in its best condition; there is no one-best-product. Talk to a skincare specialist about a broad spectrum cosmetic program which should include, retinol, sunblock with a minimum of SPF 30, moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, peptides day and night for collagen stimulation and antioxidants with Ferulic Acid in the morning for protection all day from free radical damage. There’s more you can do…but that’s a good start!
