Acne Scars

Acne scars can be disfiguring and socially distressing when widespread on the face. An adult with ice-pick scars is the result of aggressive acne that was not adequately treated or prevented. Once acne scars have set in, the surface of the skin needs to be aggressively treated.

There are three main categories of acne scars:

1. Depressed Acne Scars: Rolling acne scars – a wavy texture in the skin, boxcar acne scars – the appearance of large pores, Ice pick acne scars – deep pits with narrow openings.
2. Raised Acne Scars: Keloids – a type of raised scar that grows over and around the acne lesion often becoming quite large, thick, and rubbery hypertrophic scar – a type of raised scar that only grows over the acne lesion.
3. Skin Colour Changes – Spots: The presence of coloured spots where an acne lesion once was, commonly appearing in shades of pink, red, or purple.

Acne scars are the result of inflammation of acne blemishes. Inflamed blemishes occur when the follicle, or pore, becomes engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The pore swells, causing a break in the follicle wall. Occasionally if the rapture takes place near the skin’s surface it is usually minor and will heal quickly however, it gets more serious when there’s a break in the follicle wall resulting in scarring.

While there’s no real way to get rid of your acne scars with home remedies, you can be proactive to reduce your risk. For example, you can stop smoking or don’t start at all, resist the urge to squeeze your pimples, gently wash your skin every day and especially after sweating, and apply daily moisturizer to lock in your skin’s moisture.
